Transferium becomes operator of River Terminal Roeselare

Transferium, partner of the Multi Logistics Group, has been appointed as the new operator of River Terminal Roeselare. This modern barge platform on the busy Roeselare-Leie Canal was developed by POM West Flanders and De Vlaamse Waterweg. The terminal marks an important step in the expansion of multimodal logistics solutions in the region.

Construction of the River Terminal Roeselare began in 2020 and represents a joint investment of over 6.5 million euros by De Vlaamse Waterweg and POM West-Vlaanderen. In spring 2022, the 230-metre-long quay wall and 18,000 m² transhipment platform were completed. Due to unforeseen circumstances, cooperation with an operator could not start at the time, but after a new tender procedure, the keys have now been handed over to Transferium.

Experience and growth ambitions

Transferium, which has been a partner of Multi Logistics Group and sustainable investment group Hasco Invest since February, has a wealth of experience in the storage and handling of bulk and construction materials. CEO Nicola Samyn, who started Transferium's operations at the Port of Brussels in 2002, sees great potential in the new terminal. ‘In the Roeselare port area, we have already built up a solid customer base, good for 250,000 tonnes a year. With the new terminal, we want to significantly expand that volume. The terminal is suitable for ships up to 110 metres and a capacity of 2,200 tonnes, and with future deepening of the canal we can even receive ships up to 3,000 tonnes,’ says Samyn.

‘The Roeselare region was a missing link in our national network of transhipment points. With this concession, we can offer efficient and sustainable transport solutions for bulk, general cargo and stacked products.’

Future expansions

Besides the 1.8-hectare transhipment platform, the concession also includes a 0.9-hectare expansion zone. ‘We are planning the construction of sheds for covered storage, a weighbridge and office space. Now that the contract has been signed, we are preparing the application for our environmental permit. We hope to start in the summer,’ Samyn said.

Johannes Lagasse, CEO of Multi Logistics Group, emphasises the strategic importance of the terminal: ‘The Roeselare region was a missing link in our national network of transhipment points. With this concession, we can offer efficient and sustainable transport solutions for bulk, general cargo and stacked products.’
